Well I think it must be the Thud, since it was used so heavily in Nam and involved in so many gun duels. Certainly a few of these must have been at supersonic speed considering how fast this bird was.

Well I think its the Mirage III in Israeli hands. They did most of their kills in the 6 day war with Mirages using nothing but cannons.

I would have voted F-86 had it been on the list. it could go supersonic in a dive and I would have thought it likely to have happened in Korea if someone was diving on a MiG-15 to save another aircraft under attack. Apparently, it never happened (or was never documented to have happened).
I would not guess F-105s since they generally encountered MiGs while loaded and slow and if they were supersonic, it was while running away to fight another day. But it could have been any of the aircraft listed. just a matter of chance as to which aircraft got in the right situation and exploited it for a supersonic kill. Interestingly enough, the correct answer is my favorite aircraft of all time  |

I voted for the Mirage. It was a choice between it and the Mig21.

Well the majority of voters have picked the F-4 but I did get the following email from one of our members...

The pilot ejected and parachuted into the shark-infested Gulf of Kutch. Soni called for a rescue launch, but no traces of his opponent, Wing Comdr. Middlecoat, a decorated veteran of the 1965 war, was ever found. The Starfighter had clearly been unable to out accelerate or outrun the Mig-21 at low altitude. It was equally clear that Indian pilots were no longer intimidated by the F-104.” |
However, nowhere in the above message does it state that this combat took place at supersonic speeds when the gun kill was achieved...
Considering the low level of the combat its highly unlikey that it did...
