Ok I am going to post an answer to this poll and close it out...
The answer is...
The F-80 shooting star!
Yes Kap was correct...
The F-80 did indeed break the speed of sound in diving tests at waht would become Edwards AFB testing center...
The aircraft was under intense development and its envelope was being expanded when this occurred...
Unfortunately, shortly after this occurred the aircraft departed from controlled flight and crashed..
This was due to the aircraft not having the all moving tail...
Its control surfaces failed to provide enough control to save the aircraft

The first USAF Fighter aircraft to do so and survive was the F-84 Thunderjet, though it was heavily damaged in the attempt...
The first USAF Fighter aircraft to routinely do it, was the F-86 Sabre that could break the sound barrier in a dive...
The first USAF Fighter aircraft to do so in level flight was the F-100 Super Sabre...

Do you have any details on Col. Bong's ( THINK he made Col. ) death during developement of the P-80? I dont know if I ever heard how he died.

No I am afraid I do not. It was such a waste that he died like he did, after surviving all theat combat to die in a test accident...

Which USAF Jet Fighter was the first to break the speed of sound? It's was the the F-100. The F-86 could break the sound barrier in a dive, but the F-100 was the 1st fighter to achieve speeds above the sound of speed in level flight.
