I finished modifying my original Su-17 shape to fix some issues and improve the skin and its "depth" and positioning layout...

Plus I didnt even realize this, but I never even skined the lower fuselage after I finished the original shape! Laughing Embarassed

I have that fixed now...

Here is is, and finally in 1024 x 768 now that I have also fixed the HUD issue that kept me from flying that resolution temporarily...

I have improved the skin in many locations, as well as added additional detailing. I also fixed the nose gear (though I might work on it a bit more) and eliminated the tiny nose wheel tires...

Also I added the extra intake doors to the nose as well as enhanced the engine starter smoke exhaust grill in front of teh main gear. Now it serves a dual purpose of extra detailing as well as simulating a false canopy on the bottom fuselage making it just that much harder to determine whein way the aircraft is turning against you in a fight!

Also added hard points t the wings and fuselage as well as shadowing...

Plus added main gear detail to the lower wings...

I still need to do some additional work and add the nose probes and correct some remaining skin layout issues, but otherwise this version is completed and now I can begin work on the cammo versions...

CAG

Wow! Very Happy I like the swing wing, wing hardpoints and the rest of the plane. Cool
Camo will really set the bird off!

Regards,
Pappy

I finished the Russian WInter Cammo skin for the Su-17M4...

This was also a ral b1tch to do as I had to again remap the skin to remove duplicate skin panels and alter the positioning of the skin panels so I could line up the cammo patterns...

A real pain, but what else is there to do when its 9 degrees F outside? Laughing

Here are the pics, I hope you guy like it...

I have a viable solution for the delimma with the shadow for the SU17...

Using the current SU-7 shape the shadow resembles the Su-17 only when the wings are fully swept...

But when landing with the wings swept fully forward you dont get the forward wing shadow and it looks really weird.

So, I tested several swing wing shadow shapes and came up with this one, the TU26 shadow...

The wing shadows sweep forward for landing and back for high speed flight, better matching the SU-17's 2 position sweep and looking much more realeastic when landing...

The shadow is, of course, much to large in its current form, but I will do some quick edits and reduce its size to match the SU-17 shape so its much more realeastic.

I should be done with that editing in the next hour, until then here is the Su-17 in flight with the Tu-26 shadow shape in place...

Well the new shadow shape didnt work out to well... Sad

The shadow I built from the Tu26 shadow looked great when sitting on the ground with teh wings forward, but when flying fast the wings retracted all teh way back into the fuselage... Nothing I did woudl change that due to the formula that shadow shape uses to sweep the wing shadow...

So then I moved to the MiG23 shadow shape and reshaped it to lool like the SU-17 and now I have a warping shadow shape due to the new shape of the shadow. I may or may not be able to fix that with altering the shadow skin layout, but I doubt it...

So right now I am 0 for 2 on these shadows and things are not looking to good...

I will update you guys further if I end up with a successful shadow with sweeping wing shaodw for the SU-17 some time tomorrow...

Well this shadow shape editing stuff is for the birds! Very frustrating. I can reshape it all I want, but there are all sorts of issues with the shadow warping at certain angles (happened every time I edited a shape to have the distinctive pointed edge of teh rear of the fixed segment of the wing), the wings sweeping all weirdly after reshaping, and I ended up having to compromise and I am not very happy about it...

I tried every siwng wing shadow shape in FA and none were really very effective. And I found out the Tornado shadow shape doesnt even have wings that sweep in the shadow to match the aircraft. I guess they ran into similar problems that I did when trying to make one for that aircraft and gave up and built a fixed position shadow shape with the wings always in the forward position, thinking that the simmer would not even notice since the only time you see the shadow is when you are landing or taking off, and the wings are always forward for that anyway...

I might end up having to do the same if I cant make a better shadow shape then this one...

This is what I was able to build...

CAG

You are too hard on yourself and your work. The new SU shape, camo and shadow are a vast improvement over the default ones. Cool

Sometimes you don't sweat the small things, and just move on.
But in the end you are THE CAG. Cool

Regards,
Pappy

You definitely nailed the shadow shape with the forward swept wings.

Thanks Duke, but that shadow is unstable. it "warps" when viewed from the 6:00 position.

I dont know why it does it. The shadow polygon for the fixed wings has enough sides but it still warps it...

It has to do with the pointed trailing edge, it just cant seem to handle it.

I may try doing further tests later on before we test this bird online. I just had to take a break from working on it due to the frustation!

Thanks for the kind words guys! Smile

This is definately one of my very favorite aircraft...

It turned out pretty good and looks great in flight!

You will all enjoy it when I get FAF released...
