Post subject: FINALLY able to edit Landing Gear Animations! Reply with quote
I have FINALLY decyphered the landing gear animations in the shapes...

Specificially I have located and edited the landing gear doors on the F-18E so that I was able to shrink the size of the doors so they no longer extend into the fuselage and look weird!

Here are the original landing gear doors on the F-18E Shape I created...

In the next screenshot you can see the rear landing gear legs now extending up into the fuselage but the doors only extending up to the new lower engine pods...

This break through also means I can now stretch the nose and fuselage forward to the proper and realeastic locations and move the nose gear forward as well!!

My next edit will be moving the landing gear and fuselage forward and I will post a screenshot of that as well...

After this I can make correct landing gear fo the U-2, fix the gear on the the various shapes I have already created, and the best part is that its easy to do the specific hex edits. I am still making them by hand, but now that I know what to look for I should no longer have any problems editing them...

Look for pics of the correct gear going onto the new MiG-31 shape I created a few years back...

CAG

There is quite a difference in the gear doors. Smile

The real gear door is actually a combination of seperate doors, but from a normal distance it looks like a single door, so I will do some further edits and get the layout as accurate as I can with the limited number of polygons I have to work with.

Below is the real deal...

And I have a question... WHich is more important to the simmer... A visible tail hook or a refueling probe?

I ask because I can change the refuel prbe into a flat 2 dimensional refuel probe in the F-18 that folds out when you hit the H command...

Of course this would mean that you would be landing with the refuel probe always hanging out...

So, what do you guys think?

Given the limitations of what we're dealing with... This is a toughie. Is there a 'boom and hook' option Razz

No, seriously: I would go for the boom. Most of the time I'm too busy landing the plane to notice that I've even got a tail hook and if the boom sticks out kind of funny, eh... it would look 10x better in flight and I think that makes up for the difference.

Well, being that I live and breath NavAir I cant say I am in support of dropping the tail hook at all...

Especially in FA where there is an animation of the cable being stretched by the tail hook when trapping aboard...

And having the refuel probe stick out during landings is, well, ridiclous to me.

IF I could just get a slightly better understanding of the shape file I think I could add the refuel probe as the bombay command, IF I could just fougure out how to add new additional code to the shape file...

RIght now I dont understnad the file enough to be able to add that new special coding, but hopefully sooner or later I will...

Perhaps this is something that I should table until after FAF release as an addo on if it ever works out that I can add additional animations to the shapes...

Keep the tailhook, otherwise it would not be same flying a Navy carrier plane. You might as well be an Air Force pilot. Smile

FlyNavy! Smile

Navy Wings are made of Gold etc. Smile

Pappy

I have to echo the sentiments of the pro-tailhook contingent. Sometimes I look at the outside of the plane to check the alignment and attitude of my craft while landing, and the tailhook animation is important.

The Navy flavor is quite appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback guys...

I appreciate it. I will let this wait until I can manipulate the shape file even further before I try to implement a refuel probe...

I saw this topic late, and maybe it's my fault. But if I'm still in time, CAG, I'm for the hook.
Landing on a carrier wouldn't be as realistic as it would deserve without it.

I finished modding the gear doors, forward fuselage and landing gear...

Below is the pic of the original gear layout...

Below is the new gear layout. I also shortened the height of the landing gear struts on the main gear, lengthed the fuselage by a few feet, and moved the nose gear forward...

I also further widened and deepened the wings as well...

F-18D vs F-18E from Above...

F-18D vs F-18E From Below...

I still need to edit the tailplanes and fins to enlarge them for the Super Hornet and move them back as well as the engine nozzels to the rear...

I should complete that tomorrow...
